Grinding and polishing are common processing steps in sheet metal fabrication, primarily used to treat the surface of sheet metal parts. So, what are the key precautions to take during the grinding and polishing process in sheet metal fabrication? Below, we’ll introduce them for you. When performing grinding and polishing on sheet metal, it is essential to wear a protective mask (or face shield) and safety glasses.
Before starting the job, check whether the grinding wheel is damaged, whether the safety protection devices are intact, and whether the ventilation and dust removal equipment is functioning properly. During installation, pay attention to the tightness of the nuts—ensure they are tightened sufficiently so that the grinding wheel does not slip during operation. If there are multiple tightening screws, tighten them gradually and evenly in a diagonal sequence.
After the grinding wheel is installed, it is essential to reattach the guard and then perform a trial run. For straight grinding wheels, they should be run idle for 5 minutes. During operation, the grinding wheel must not exhibit any noticeable vibration. When grinding or polishing, first turn on the dust collection equipment, hold the workpiece firmly, and avoid applying excessive force. Never use a lever to press down on the component, and never stand directly in front of the grinding wheel while operating—this is to prevent the grinding wheel from breaking and causing injury.
When two or more people are simultaneously performing grinding and polishing operations, it is strictly prohibited to work at the same time in opposite directions facing each other, to prevent accidents. The recesses and protrusions on the workpiece should be gently ground and polished; avoid applying excessive force, and never grind the sharp edges of the workpiece, as this could cause the grinding wheel to break and injure someone. After finishing the job, be sure to disconnect the power supply and only leave your post once you’ve confirmed that the grinding wheel has completely stopped rotating.
